Why should I use Trove? What's different?

  • Trove learns from you: what you click on, what you share, what topics you care about, what sources you value. This makes Trove different for each person — it surfaces what's important to you, now.
  • Trove's editors look out for the most interesting stories across our 10,000-plus sources to keep you up to speed on what the world's talking about.

What does "Powered by Trove" mean?

Trove is a news service engine that powers both Trove.com and its mobile apps, as well as other properties including Washington Post Social Reader. Trove works by casting a wide net to find content to match your interests: It scours its sources on the Web, analyzing articles and blog posts to find entities — people, places, things, or concepts — in text. Based what it finds, Trove classifies the article into one or more of hundreds of topics.

To make sure Trove is on top of people's interests, we have a team of editors who use the entities and topics to design “channels.” To create a channel for New York-area sports teams, for example, they might combine the New York, NY entity and the Sports topic. The possibilities are endless.

Trove instantly builds your personal home page by matching our channels to your Facebook likes and interests. So if your interest is as broad as NFL Football or as narrow as Air Guitars, we can deliver the latest stories.

What is the Washington Post Social Reader?

Washington Post Social Reader is a free Facebook application that offers a new way to read news from The Washington Post and more of the Web’s best news sources: with your friends. Once you’re using the app, the stories you read will be instantly shared with your friends, and your friends’ reads will be shared with you, creating a socially powered newswire of intriguing articles.

What are channels?

On Trove, each interest you have sits in its own channel. You can add channels from the Channel Finder at the top of the front page, from the Editors' Picks on the left side, from the Channel Gallery, — or search Trove and add channels from the results.

Each channel can be tuned to your preferences — and to highlight what you care about.

How can I add channels?

You can add channels with the Channel Finder:

  • Pick: Choose one channel from a presented pair to add it to your page. Or choose both. Or skip them to see more.
  • Search: Type an interest into the search box on any page. You can select a channel from the suggestions that display below the search box, or search to see results and then add the channel.
  • Friends: See channels that friends and others have recommended.

You can also add channels from the Editors' Picks area on the left side of the front page; each article block has at least one channel that you can add to your collection.

What are some tips for making great channels?

You can add topics to a channel to further focus it on what you care about most. At the top of each channel's page is a box labeled "Add A Topic or Source." Use that box to focus your channel on topics and sources you care about.

Have a source you like getting news from? If your source is in Trove's catalogue, articles from it will be boosted in a channel's results when you add it. (If your source isn't in our catalogue, let us know.).

How can I see more from sources I like?

You can set preferred sources on any Trove channel page.

  • Go to a channel's page by clicking its name.
  • At the top of the channel page there's a box labeled "Add A Topic or Source" that you can use to type in the names of sources.
  • Type in the name of your source. If the name appears as a suggestion under the box as you type, click on that suggestion. The source will become a preferred source for that channel.
  • If you don't see your source as a suggestion, you can let us know.

How can I avoid topics or sources I don't want to see?

You can avoid topics and sources in any channel.

  • Go to a channel's page by clicking its name.
  • At the top of the channel page there's a box labeled "Add A Topic or Source." Type in the topic or source you want to avoid.
  • When you've added the topic or source, you can tell the channel to avoid it. Hover your cursor over the topic or source, and you'll see 3 icons. Click the second of these to avoid seeing articles that mention that topic or are from a certain source.

How are sources chosen and how is their content displayed?

In order to serve our readers' widely varying interests, we aim to include a wide swath of sources. We pull in brief excerpts of content regularly and we link users back to the source site for a full article view. You'll notice a few exceptions to that rule: more content from our sister sites within the Washington Post Company, sites that have partnered with Trove, or from services to which Trove is subscribed will appear on Trove-branded pages.

We're constantly reviewing and adding quality sources — we've got 10,000-plus and counting. If there's a source you trust you don't see, chances are it will be added very soon. But you should still feel free to suggest it.

How is the front page organized and how can I order what's there?

Trove learns from what you do: the articles you've clicked on, the channels you visit and more. Trove also watches each channel's flow of news to see if there are bursts of new articles. So the front page is updated based on your activity and what's happening in the world.

At this time you can't re-order the page directly.

How can I remove channels?

On the front page, hover your cursor over any channel's headline block, and you'll see an X. Click the X to delete the channel.

You can also click the "Channels" link at the top of the page. Move your cursor down the list, and you'll see an X to delete each channel.

If you are on a channel's page, you can click "Remove from your channels" on the right side of the page.

Trove has a team of editors who monitor the Web for the latest news and the most interesting stories. The Editors' Picks keep you up to speed on what the world is reading about alongside articles from your channels.

How can I save articles to read later?

Hover your cursor over any article and you'll see a star icon. Clicking that saves a link to the article to your "Saved Items" page. You can get to "Saved Items" from the top of any page.

How can I hide articles I don't want to see anymore?

Hover your cursor over articles in your channels and you'll see an X. Clicking that removes the article from your page. Hiding an article doesn't affect what you see in the future, it's just a means of removing articles you no longer want to see.

What are conversations?

Conversations are public discussions among Trove users. Start or contribute to conversations as you use Trove to meet and engage with people from around the world.

How can I set my daily email preferences?

At the top of any Trove page, click the "Settings" link. On the "Settings" page, clicking "Edit your settings" will allow you to set the number of channels you get in your email, the time of day it's delivered, as well as how many headlines you'll see per channel. You can also turn off delivery of the email.

  • Don't have to create yet another new account on a new site.

Asking users to log in with Facebook also makes it harder for spammers to create fake Trove accounts.
